He became an authority on Nonsuch Palace in Ewell, for which Henry VIII had cleared the site, in flagrant defiance of his own Government's Enclosure Acts, and begun to build during the later years of his reign: it was demolished during the Restoration. Dent published The excavation of Nonsuch Palace (1959), The quest for Nonsuch (1962, second edition 1970) and, with Martin Biddle, Nonsuch (1960).
